A third dead whale was discovered on a beach in Bali over the weekend, bringing the total number of huge marine mammals that have washed up on the island this year to three. Authorities are investigating potential causes of the alarming occurrence.

In the latest incident, a female sperm whale was found dead by villagers near Yeh Leh Beach in Jembrana on Saturday. The whale underwent a necropsy before being buried at the same beach at 9 p.m. yesterday.

The carcass of the third whale was already decomposing when it was discovered, according to Pande Ketut Cahya Krisnanta, the marine environment program officer for the nonprofit organization Yayasan Bali Bersih, who spoke with Coconuts Bali.

“For now, we, along with a team of vets, agreed to state that the whale was ‘sick’ and that was why it washed ashore. As for what illness, we need to wait for lab results and that can take up to three to four weeks,” he said in a text message.

Another female sperm whale was discovered dead on a beach in Karangasem back on April 6. It was reported that the whale was injured but still alive when it washed up on Klungkung beach that day. With the help of a rising tide, locals and authorities managed to drive the whale back into the water, but the marine animal met its untimely end soon after.

The second female sperm whale was also found sick, although specialists have not yet been able to determine the subtleties of her condition.

A Bryde’s whale, the first whale found dead this year, washed up on Seseh Beach in Munggu on January 19. The carcass was so decomposed that a necropsy could not be performed, so the cause of death could not be determined.

The head of the Bali Office of Indonesia’s Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA). Agus Budi Santosa, hypothesizes a number of factors for the phenomenon, including increasing noise pollution from the ocean and drastic weather changes.

“It should be understood that the waters of Bali Island serve as an annual migration path for big sea mammals including sperm whales. The majority of fish and sea mammals follow the upwelling of warm sea current that is rich with planktons,” he told CNN Indonesia reporters.

Bali wants to outlaw tourists from riding motorbikes because they are “roaming around with motorbikes, without wearing T-shirts and clothes, with no helmets, violating [traffic rules],” according to the government.

According to Bali Governor I Wayan Koster, tourists would only be permitted to rent cars through travel agencies or regional tourism businesses.

It happens in the midst of a backlash against visitors riding motorcycles on the island, where police allege that more than 171 foreign nationals disobeyed traffic rules over the course of two weeks in late February to early March. According to authorities, some tourists also have fake license plates.

“If you are a tourist, then act like a tourist,” the governor said during a press conference this week.

He added that tourists are “disorderly and they misbehave” and assure that the ban would help to “ensure quality and dignified tourism.”

“[Tourists should] use the vehicles prepared by travel agents, instead of roaming around with motorcycles, without wearing T-shirts and clothes, with no helmets, violating [traffic rules], and even without a license,” he said.

Bali Governor Urges Residents To Stop Complaining About Traffic Jams

Putu Jayan Danu Putra, the Inspector General of Police and Chief of Bali Regional Police, stressed the importance of tourists obeying the law when renting cars.

“We provide education to rental vehicles that will be rented out to foreigners to always comply with existing traffic rules,” he explained.

In recent years, social media has increasingly shared stories and videos about foreign tourists violating traffic rules in Bali. This includes a video of a Russian Instagramer who performed a stunt by flying off a jetty on his motorcycle in 2020. Also, a video of an Australian woman yelling at police after being pulled over for riding a motorcycle without a helmet went viral.

There have also been deaths. After allegedly visiting a nightclub in the Legian area, 36-year-old Englishman Michael Andrew was found dead in a swamp with his scooter in April. However, there is no evidence that he had broken any laws before his death; instead, he is believed to have died in a car accident.

Most recently, in January of this year, a Russian tourist who was apparently driving drunk was killed in a collision with a local, and a Ukrainian tourist died after losing control of his motorcycle.

According to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Department, the island’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) received more than 2.1 million visitors in 2018 compared to 6.2 million in 2019. Although this appears to be a small fraction of pre-pandemic levels, it is a significant increase over the 34 visitors who came to the island in 2021.

The results of the first month of the year, announced by Bali Airport officials, are encouraging for Bali’s tourism industry.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns and travel restrictions, 2023 will be the first full calendar year for tourism. The government, tourism-related businesses and individuals have set their sights high for the new year.

The number of passengers passing through I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in January was cause for celebration, according to Handy Heryudhitiawan, the airport’s general manager. With international borders not fully reopened until February 2022, it will not be difficult to surpass the number of passengers handled in January 2022. January arrivals were up 163%.

“The increase in the number of passengers was influenced by the opening of [more] international flights since March 2022. In January 2023, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport served 810.930 international passengers,” Heryudhitiawan shared,

crowd of tourists watching bali's celebration

He informed that of these people 427,624 left the island and 383,288 arrived. Of course, as the visitors who come to the island over Christmas and New Year’s depart and the low season begins, the departures in January outweigh the arrivals. Still, the fact that more than 350,000 visitors came is quite encouraging for Bali’s tourism industry.

Heryudhitiawan explained the context of the initial figures. He clarified that most visitors arrive in Bali from Singapore. Since Singapore is a well-liked transit destination for visitors from around the world, the Singapore-Bali route was the most popular with 168,744 passengers. This was followed by slightly less than 100,000 travelers from Kuala Lumpur and another 75,258 travelers from Melbourne arriving in Denpasar.

Australian tourists are still the ones that visit Bali the most frequently. 99,075 passengers in total arrived in Bali in January 2023 from seven places served by Australian direct flights. With 22,703 arrivals, Russian travelers came in second, followed by Indian visitors with 22,116.

At I Gusti Ngurah Rai International, domestic arrivals predominate over international arrivals. Heryudhitiawan told reporters, “as for domestic routes, flights from Soekarno Hatta International Airport became the largest contributor to passenger traffic with 328,939 passengers. Followed by Surabaya with 85,433 passengers and Ujung Pandang with 42,717 passengers.”

He added, “We hope that the upward trend in the number of domestic and international air travelers on the island of Bali will continue to be well maintained so that the reactivation of international flights to new routes is expected to be realized this year.”

The island has become increasingly popular with digital nomads in recent years, especially since Indonesia introduced a visa for remote workers last October.

In a list compiled by the community website Digital Nomads, two cities in Bali – Canggu and Ubud – were included among the top five choices for remote workers. The list recognized the best places to live for digital nomads based on factors such as monthly cost of living and Wi-Fi speed.

The town of Canggu, known for its world-class surfing, ranked third. The location is excellent for remote workers who want to live near the sea. There are “plenty of coworking spaces, cafes, events and workshops,” the website says.

In Canggu, digital nomads should anticipate monthly costs of about $1,350 and a reasonable Wi-Fi speed of 25 Mbps.

Canggu, Bali

“Canggu has so much energy and excitement,” one digital nomad posted on Nomad List in January, a website devoted to the ins and outs of working remotely. Nomad List gathers anonymous reviews of destinations.

Ubud, which came in fourth on their list, was commended by Digital Nomads for its natural beauty and biodiversity. According to the website, the town is a “hotspot for yogis,” and it’s ideal for people seeking a laid-back lifestyle.

The Digital Nomad claims that Wi-Fi connections outside coworking spaces can be unreliable, but usually have a speed of 20 Mbps. In Ubud, remote workers can expect to pay $1,200 per month.

Ubud is “pretty damn good,” according to a digital nomad who posted about it on Nomad List. It has plenty of waterfalls, jungles, and a beautiful beach.

Living in one of these well-known spots for digital nomads can cost more than $1,000, while other areas of Bali can be far more affordable. Nomad List estimates, for example, that remote workers in the Seseh area of Bali only have to spend $520 per month.

According to Digital Nomads’ list, three of the top five locations for remote workers are in Southeast Asia.

Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, came in first. Melbourne, Australia, and Chiang Mai, Thailand, ranked second and third, respectively.

Bali has announced that a chartered flight carrying 210 Chinese people is due to depart from Shenzhen and land in Bali on Sunday. This would be the first direct trip from China to the resort island since the start of the pandemic, an official said.

The chairman of the Bali Province Tourism Agency, Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun, was quoted by the news agency Antara as claiming that his department had obtained confirmation from Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

“On Jan. 22 there will be a chartered flight from Shenzhen, China. The number of passengers is 210,” he said.

However, they would not be the first Chinese visitors to land in Bali following the pandemic. The agency had previously reported that Bali began to receive hundreds of Chinese visitors each month in late 2022, although most of them arrived via Singapore or Jakarta.

China Airlines Resumes Operations To Bali After A 2-year Break

This could signal the reintroduction of regular flights between China and Bali. Chinese tourists were among the most numerous on the island before the pandemic. 1,186, 057 arrivals, or about 20 percent, arrived from China in 2019, out of a total of 6,275,210 documented arrivals.

Tjokorda stated that the island anticipates their government will soon announce frequent flights from China.

Despite the rising number of COVID-19 cases in China, Indonesia has not placed a travel ban on Chinese citizens. Nevertheless, as of the day that this article was published, there are no regular flights connecting China with Indonesia.

Earthquakes occur frequently in Bali, and residents are aware that an earthquake is frequently preceded by a tsunami. As a result, there is a persistent general threat, and there is no way to totally avoid tsunamis.

If you are in Bali during an earthquake, take cover under a sturdy table or piece of furniture until the shaking stops, and then remain indoors until it is safe to move.

In addition, it can be said that Indonesia is the country having the most active volcanoes in the world. There are 147 volcanoes, and 76 of them are active. They spread along the islands of Sumatra, Java, Celebes, and Lesser Sunda.

The island of Bali has three: Agung, Batur and Buyan-Bratan.

Here is a list of the last earthquakes affecting Bali or nearby locations:

The extended report below:

The epicenter of the earthquake, which was 124 km below the surface of the water, was located at 9.36 south latitude and 115.59 east longitude, or 74 km southeast of South Kuta, according to official information given by the Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).

Although there have been online reports claiming that the earthquake was felt in Bali as a 5.5, their official assessment states that the earthquake was 5.8 in magnitude.

The BMKG has stated that this earthquake had little potential for a tsunami and that no additional precautions need to be taken in Bali, the adjacent Nusa Islands, the Gili Islands, or Lombok, where the earthquake also felt very strongly.

Bali Earthquake sign

Residents of Java, Madura, and Sumbawa also felt the effects of the earthquake, which was felt widely over Lombok.

The earthquake that struck Bali on Monday afternoon did minor damage to buildings, but no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.

A video where the roof tragically collapsed over the kitchen of a local family in Kuta was posted on Twitter shortly after the earthquake by the Indonesian news outlet BuddyKu Official.

Both inland towards Denpasar and along the southern coast in popular tourist resorts such as Kuta felt the tremor.

I Dewa Gede Rai, the head of protocol and communications at the Denpasar City Secretariat, told the Bali Tribune he felt the earthquake as he sat at his desk. “I was still working,” he noted. “At first it was small, so I just got up. Then it got bigger and I immediately started running.”

The earthquake was also felt by nearby tourists, who were startled by the incident.

Although many Indonesians are used to the feeling of an earthquake, it can be frightening and extremely confusing when experiencing one for the first time. Australian tourists in Bali told news.au that the floorboards in their hotel rooms had shifted.

The experience of an earthquake is frequently described as a headspin, sometimes resembling abrupt dizziness before the body recognizes the sensation is coming from the outside environment. Others have noted how, despite the fact that earthquakes frequently last only a short time, time nearly seems to stop.

During a press conference, Indonesia’s Minister for Tourism and Creative Economies, Sandiaga Uno, revealed his plans to recession-proof Bali.

He explained to the media how he and his teams will modify their 2023 plan in light of the changing nature of the global economy. He advised Indonesia to stay ahead of the curve to mitigate the impact of the impending global recession on the country’s tourism industry.

In his opening remarks, Minister Uno discussed how the three largest economies in the world—North America, China, and Europe—are all expected to experience recessions in 2023. He stated: “Of course, this will have an impact on people’s spending, especially in the tourism sector. Therefore, we immediately made adjustments in terms of focus on developing tourism and the creative economy, especially foreign tourists.”

He emphasized that tourists from India, Australia and New Zealand are showing more and more interest in visiting Indonesia. Malaysia and Singapore also continue to expand, he continued. Adjustments needed to help the tourism industry weather the economic downturn include marketing initiatives such as his collaboration with Airbnb and the provision of more direct flights to the country’s major tourist attractions such as Bali, according to Minister Uno.

He explained, “there have been several foreign direct flights from Qatar and Dubai that have already delivered. We also want additions from Singapore and several ASEAN countries. This is what we are trying to do in the first quarter of this year in collaboration with airlines and the Ministry of Transportation so that the market is very this potential also includes India being served by direct flights, especially to the two leading destinations, namely Denpasar and Jakarta, maybe later it can be added to other destinations”.

There have been rumors that direct flights from Mumbai and the Chinese mainland will begin operating in 2023, but neither the airlines nor the Department of Transportation have made any formal announcements.

Minister Uno is determined to ensure that the development of the tourism industry is not limited to Bali. He has prioritized five areas for tourism growth. These include Labuan Bajo in the Flores Islands and Lake Toba in Sumatra.

He is still optimistic about the possibilities for the Indonesian economy in 2023, despite the threat of global recession. “Indonesia will still grow by around 5 percent. Of course, we must focus on encouraging the movement of domestic tourists to reach the target number of 1.2 billion to 1.4 billion. We will greatly encourage the movement of domestic tourists,” said the Minister.

A former Mandala Air Boeing 737 that had been abandoned and unusable in Bali was bought by Russian businessman Felix Demin in 2021. The airplane is currently being transformed into a two-bedroom villa.

Iconic environment

After obtaining the necessary permits in September 2021, it took a week to move the aircraft to its new location on the hill, according to Business Insider. Before it was reassembled at its new location, it was transported in two separate pieces. The cabin and flight systems were all removed, but the fuselage still has the same shape. This makes room for everything you need when perched on an Indonesian mountaintop.

Demin said,

“Externally and structurally, this is a jet aircraft that we have turned into a luxury hotel.”

The cost to stay in a bedroom with a basic design and use the toilet in the former cockpit is not quite in the range of a surf hostel. The project is already listed as being available for rent, with a nightly rate of 113.999.999 Indonesian Rupiah. That comes to about $7,367.

Another Mandala 737 conversions

In 2014, Mandala Airlines, an Indonesian airline, stopped flying. Over the course of its brief four-year existence, the airline operated a total of 18 Boeing 737s. All but two of the aircraft were 737-200s, and the lone 737-400. One of the latter has also found a new purpose after landing and is preserved as Lily Airways, a restaurant in Wuhan, China.

Another budget Boeing

There is always the JumboStay Boeing 747 at Stockholm Arlanda Airport if the cost of the private mountaintop 737 seems a bit too high for you. This option is also available if you prefer to sleep in an older Boeing. Even though there’s no infinity pool or private bathroom in the cockpit, the location is rather amazing.
