Uruguay is a good place to work and live for digital nomads after the country passed legislation permitting digital nomads access to the country. The legislation is a step in the right direction for most remote workers and digital nomads who can now obtain residency permits to work in the country legally.

According to Chris Roe, a global communication coach based in New York City, Uruguay is a good sweet spot between Eastern Europe and the United States West Coast. Roe has been a digital nomad in Uruguay and has praised the country for its perfect work-life balance.

Uruguay has taken steps in recent years to attract more ICT workers by offering a tax regime and pension that is more favorable. The regulatory changes have played a key role in attracting many remote workers and digital nomads to Uruguay.

The application process for residency in Uruguay is a simple process that is completed via an online form. Applicants are required to sign an affidavit stating that they have the means to support themselves financially and provide their personal information by completing an online form.

Applicants have the opportunity to apply for an additional six months extension after living in the country for six months. Digital nomads looking for an extension should show proof of a clean criminal record in countries where they have resided for a period of six months or more in the last five years.

Some of the popular cities in Uruguay that are popular destinations for many digital nomads include Punta del Este, Montevideo, and Colonia del Sacramento.

Uruguay has become a popular destination for many digital nomads and the new legislation means that remote workers and entrepreneurs can now relocate and work in the country legally. The friendly people, cuisine, unique art, natural beaches, and laid-back lifestyle make it easy for digital nomads to feel at home.

Taking online surveys

Taking surveys is one of the easiest remote jobs without a degree that allows you to make money. It does not take much more than signing up, creating a profile, and giving feedback on ads, articles, or services.

One of the best platforms to earn by taking surveys is Surveyjunkie.com (Only US, CANADA, AUS).

Market analysts use online surveys to gage public opinion on specific items or topics. Market research firms are hired by brand companies to conduct these surveys on their behalf. You can sign up on these market research sites, participate in surveys, and get paid for your time.

You fill out questionnaires and provide honest feedback to the market research companies. Your feedback helps companies and brands develop better, new products and services.

English Teachers

english teacher working remotely from library

Students from all over the world learn English with online English teachers. Mostly, the focus is on conversational English, which means there’s not a lot of planning as teachers speak with non-native speakers in a relaxed environment.

One of the best platforms to start as a language teacher is Preply – You can earn up to $550/week!

The best part is these instructors do not normally teach difficult grammar rules and can use a variety of channels to market their services.

Although not all English teachers need to have a college degree, most of these professionals have a real passion for educating others.

In general, language teaching is definitely one of the easiest remote jobs without degree and you can start with zero experience as there is always a demand for conversation classes. All you need is to be native and fluent in some of the common languages such as English, Spanish or German.

Translation

Translating text or speech into another language is vital when many countries’ economies are so interdependent.

Though translation software is helpful, it leaves companies open to puzzling or embarrassing mistakes — a human touch is necessary to make sure the final product makes sense. To thrive in this field, employees need to speak more than one language and have excellent writing abilities.

Websites to find gigs: fiverr.com, upwork.com

Virtual Assistance

virtual assistant working remotely

Virtual assistants help companies or people with administrative tasks. Scheduling appointments, answering emails, and handling payment issues are just three things a virtual assistant might do.

To thrive in this job, a worker needs to be a quick thinker with the ability to switch between diverse tasks. Reliability is also critical for virtual assistants.

Voice-over artists

Voice-over artists act in radio commercials, narrate audiobooks, read show scripts, and perform other voice-acting tasks. By precisely pronouncing words and timing their responses, they use their voice to portray the emotion and mood of the assignment. Voice actors can alter their voices to simulate the sounds of various characters or just use their own voices.

With the correct audio tools and a decent sound, voice-over actors may work remotely. This includes audio editing software, headphones, a good microphone, acoustic insulation, and a computer to keep the recording. To thrive in this field, you probably need to develop a reel and get knowledgeable about its specializations.

Voice123.com is one of the best platforms to find

Tech Support

Specialists in tech support help businesses by aiding in any technical issues experienced by employees or customers. Solid working knowledge of computers is a must but for some of the positions and lower levels of support, you can be easily trained and start with no prior experience!

Depending on the business in question, a tech support specialist might help either co-workers or customers troubleshoot technical problems. This field also includes the upkeep of computer systems.

Check out some of the Tech Support job part-time/full-time opportunities here.

Data Entry

Data entry workers manage electronic data, entering and updating information in computer systems. This job requires the ability to use the software as directed. Being a quick typist is also a plus.

For individuals who want to start remote employment as soon as possible but feel they lack specialized skills, data entry is an excellent choice.

Customer Service

Customer service workers help businesses create good customer experiences. This work includes answering questions, solving customer problems, and knowing when to direct a customer toward someone better suited to help.

Customer service professionals must have excellent people skills. Friendliness and patience are key — especially when customers get upset.

Interaction with customers can take several forms, but the most popular remote communication methods are phone, chat, and email.

Programming

Programmers create computer programs and mobile applications by writing code. They also help manage, troubleshoot, and debug systems and software to make sure everything is working properly.

Many technological disciplines require programming skills, but careers in software and web development are in particularly high demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of web development occupations is expected to increase by as much as 15% between 2016 and 2026, creating 24,400 new jobs.

The best thing about programming is that you can learn the skills yourself. You can start programming right away by getting a few good books or an online course.

Dance teachers

Dance instructors teach and train students in dance, combining elements of technique, performance, and choreography into their teaching methods.

Some teachers specialize in a single style, while others teach ballet, jazz, modern, tap, ballroom, swing, salsa, hip-hop, folk, and traditional dance forms from around the world.

Dance instructors work in a variety of locations, from schools and private studios to community centers, online or in gyms, and with a large group of students ranging from young children to adults.

Video Editing

Video content is essential for attaining corporate and social media goals such as brand awareness, audience engagement, and lead generation, to name a few.

Video editors are in charge of compiling and editing raw material and turning it into a final product while adhering to the general video brand messaging strategy.

Regular content to edit includes camera footage, dialogues, sound effects, graphics, and special effects.

Influencers, companies, and advertisers are among the thousands of people requiring video editors.

Most Mac laptops come with iMovie, which can be used to begin editing video.

There are also plenty of free video editing tools available online that can be used to start developing a portfolio. Countless YouTube tutorials teach how to use them.

Podcast Management

Despite being available for decades, podcasts have skyrocketed in popularity in the last few years. Podcast management is an amazing online job that entails audio editing, guest management, copywriting, or any combination of those.

The best part of it is that those interested in this role can learn how to do it by themselves.

Podcast managers are responsible for editing raw audio before uploading it and sharing it. But, it’s not as simple as it looks. The editing process includes adjusting volume, cutting away silence, correcting linguistic errors, and minimizing background noise.

People in this sector gather as much information as they can and apply it to better their skills. Most of them use tools such as GarageBand, read blogs about audio editing and practice uploading podcasts.

For those who want to go deeper into the skills required and get some practice, 90 Day VA has just launched a new module on podcast management.

Inside Sales Representative

Man making a phone call

Inside sales representatives are critical to reaching client acquisition and revenue growth targets.

They are usually folks who are comfortable making dozens of calls per day, collaborating with channel partners, generating leads, and qualifying prospects.

These specialists do not need a degree, but they do need excellent verbal and writing communication skills because they must answer the majority of consumer inquiries and give further information via email.

They also spend time communicating with existing clients to ensure that they are satisfied and to present them with new products and services that they might be interested in.

This position demands excellent organizational abilities as well as the capacity to multitask.

Writers

Writers are most likely the ones who pioneered remote work. Writers create a wide range of written materials that are distributed to audiences in a variety of ways. Writers provide material for readers, listeners, and viewers in a variety of multimedia channels.

Depending on the field in which they work, most writers have at least a rudimentary understanding of technology, such as personal computers and the Internet.

Their duties include researching their topic, proofreading their drafts, and updating a writing project based on clients or editors’ feedback.

Online Fitness Trainer

Online fitness instructors post videos and instructional articles that show how to perform various exercises and activities to improve a client’s fitness. They teach live online classes where they demonstrate the correct way to perform an exercise, and also offer one-on-one sessions where they give personalized advice and instruction.

People with a passion for fitness can apply to become online fitness instructors or make their own videos to promote personal training to their own clients as independent contractors.

Interpretation

First and foremost, interpreters are not translators. In most cases, translators require years of academic training to correctly translate books, media, and other sources.

Interpreters listen to conversations, speeches, and other utterances and interpret these verbal communications from one language into another. They act as a medium when language barriers exist.

A great number of interpreters engage in video conferences with physicians to “interpret” what patients are saying.

Interpreters determine the core meaning of what one party is saying and try to express that meaning concisely and accurately for others to understand.

Interpreters work in education, health care, insurance, law, and other industries.

Customer care manager

Customer care managers provide high-level help to customers and entry-level customer support representatives. Customer service managers create customer service policies and best practices for problem resolution. They train customer service workers, handle escalated tickets, and assess customer satisfaction to help guide the company’s strategy.

You can qualify for many customer care management positions without a formal degree if you have experience in remote customer assistance. Customer management software experience can help you stand out as a candidate.

Email marketing

Email marketing specialists help businesses close sales by creating appealing email campaigns mostly focused on reaching out to potential clients or retaining existing customers with new services and products.

Designing infographics and identifying which images, text, and link pathways create the best results for the company are all part of the creative side of email marketing.

Email marketing professionals typically require some technical knowledge in order to accurately assess email reader interactions and adjust future emails based on data analysis.

However, those who have some expertise in writing or managing digital content will not need a degree for this position.

They can also increase their chances of landing a highly-paid remote position by learning about email marketing tools and developing a portfolio of their previous digital tasks.

Mortgage Underwriter

With the boom in the real estate market, there is a great demand for underwriters. Underwriters typically analyze and evaluate all aspects of a borrower’s credit, underwrite mortgage loans, and process customer information.

The role of a mortgage loan underwriter is to evaluate the risk of default, which is the overall risk that you will not be able to repay the mortgage. To that end, the underwriter evaluates factors that help the lender understand your financial situation, including your credit score.

Virtual Bookkeeper

A virtual bookkeeper manages their clients’ books remotely; they might not even be in the same time zone as you. All messages and financial document storage are handled by accounting software.

The program helps you manage your clients’ records. You categorize a customer’s transactions and check if the balances on the accounts correspond to the receipts, purchase orders and invoices. Virtual bookkeepers have remote access to business records, sort them logically and securely, create transaction reports and resolve inconsistencies.

While traditional degrees are not required for virtual bookkeepers, some employers insist on a bookkeeping certificate. Administrative and invoicing experience easily transfers to a virtual bookkeeping position.

Content Managing

This remote position entails supervising marketing initiatives aimed at engaging customers and ensuring that they have a favorable opinion of the company and its products or services.

A content manager assists companies in developing a consistent corporate identity and maintaining a robust online presence.

Workers in this position also help websites determine what types of writing, videos, and other materials to produce and promote. They look for effective keywords to focus on, discuss new content ideas and plan how to effectively promote them.

As they manage large volumes of customer input, effective content managers use analytics tools to develop customized content for their target markets.

Learning the essentials of analytics tools and content marketing online is enough to start seeking freelance content manager jobs.

Transcription

girl transcribing audio files

Transcription is one of the most common remote jobs without degree as you only listen to audio files and write down what you hear. Closed captions, transcripts of court proceedings, and more are all created by people in this line of work.

Putting together transcription documents requires several skills. In addition to excellent knowledge of punctuation and grammar, a transcriptionist also needs a good ear and lots of patience.

The ability to type quickly is also necessary.

A great website to start is: Rev.com

Sales

Successful salespeople have excellent social skills. They understand the wants and needs of potential customers — and they’re great at explaining how their company can fulfill those needs.

Though some involve interaction with existing customers, most remote sales opportunities for beginners focus on cold calling.

Prospective employees should consider a sales department’s pay structure before signing on to work: Pay can come in the form of salary, salary plus commission, or just commission.

Social Media Coordination

A social media coordinator handles a business’s social media activities. Some even strategize with companies to create entire social media campaigns.

They might be responsible for posting to their employer’s accounts, sharing interesting information, and engaging potential customers. That can involve posting links, videos, photos, articles, or even clever jokes.

To do well in this line of work, a social media coordinator needs to understand their employer’s preferred tone and primary message. A coordinator must also understand what sort of content connects with a business’s customer base.

Graphic Design

graphic designer working remotely from home

Graphic designers use technology to create visual concepts — in other words, to create useful art for companies. Their skills are necessary for the development of everything from logos to advertisements.

People in this field need to have a firm grasp of how consumers perceive visual elements. What colors inspire trust? What do symbols mean in different cultures? What art styles suit different types of products and services?

Those are all questions a good graphic designer can answer.

To succeed in this area, a designer needs to be skilled in using certain software. Photoshop, InDesign, and Canva are three popular options.

Online Tutoring

Tutors are one-on-one teachers. However, unlike becoming a teacher, becoming an online tutor doesn’t always require a degree.

Having a degree can help if someone wants to provide tutoring in a highly technical area like linear algebra or astrophysics, but not all tutoring requires advanced education. For instance, anyone who speaks and writes a language fluently can tutor others in that language.

Tutoring jobs can cover nearly any topic for any grade level. Whether someone wants to teach graduate students or first graders, there are students who need their services.

Travel Agent

Remote travel agents work from anywhere in the world assisting customers in booking a variety of aspects of their leisure or business travel including hotel reservations, flights, cruises, tourist packages, car rental services and more.

By understanding their preferences and budgets, travel agents can help their customers anticipate their own travel needs and possibilities.

To do so, these professionals should have the necessary skills to collect payments, determine the most suitable travel insurance, coordinate transportation, handle travel inconveniences such as cancellations and refunds as well as advise clients regarding destinations, cultures, customs, weather and local activities.

Given the huge amount of travel-related content available online, a knowledgeable travel agent stays current on travel trends, activities, and top destination bargains in order to provide added value to their clients.

A degree is not essential, but the ability to keep accurate records of bookings, payments, transactions, phone calls, and meetings is required.

Telemarketing

Telemarketers are people who are responsible for calling potential customers and selling items or asking for donations. Their duties include maintaining customer contact lists, communicating the benefits of their services, and obtaining payment information when necessary.

They may work from home, contacting prospects, informing customers of the benefits of their products, and responding to queries or concerns. Some telemarketers also spend time tracking down phone numbers of potential buyers who might be interested in their services.

Telemarketing jobs are perfect for people who are personable, polite, and courteous since they effortlessly connect with customers.

Claims adjuster

Claims adjuster

Claims adjusters work for insurance companies remotely analyzing insurance claims in their area. They examine the property of people who have filed insurance claims to determine if they are eligible for reimbursement from the insurer. Claims adjusters record statements, analyze police records, and interpret coverage policies for each claim.

As a claims adjuster, you will spend some time in the field gathering evidence for a claim and some time in your home office doing research and preparing reports. For each claim, you remotely submit your findings to the insurance company.

Insurance agent

Customers are contacted by insurance agents by phone or email to sell them home, auto, life or general insurance coverage. In order to discuss the terms they can offer, they meet with people who need insurance and gather information about them. Based on their clients’ circumstances, insurance agents negotiate payment amounts, deductibles, premiums, and additional services.

A degree or previous experience is not a requirement to become an insurance agent. You can begin working with an insurer to represent its services remotely once you have prepared for the state-required licensing exam.

Check remote insurance agent positions.

Executive Assistant

Executive assistants give business executives thoughtful help. To manage their schedules, screen incoming calls, make presentations, order supplies, and handle all other administrative tasks, they work closely with a single executive. Executive assistants attend meetings with other executives and take time to make sure they are always organized.

Many executive assistants work from home, especially for CEOs who do so themselves. They handle the executive’s clerical duties from home, using online workplace technologies.

Remote Merchandiser

One of those well-paying jobs with little to no work experience is Merchandiser. You can apply for this job if you have a high school diploma or GED. The salary ranges from $17 to $35 per hour and can be higher.

As a merchandiser, you will be responsible for displaying merchandise on-site or online and can do everything from managing inventory to creating eye-catching displays to sell specific items.

Working full-time for a reputable company, you’ll be eligible for many benefits that boost your income, including health, life and disability insurance. You are also entitled to overtime pay; this is how most merchandisers who are paid a low hourly wage earn their living.

Web developer

To create a useful, engaging website, web developers produce code and scripts. They design unique web pages and build in navigation systems so customers can access various website features. Web designers may be concerned with the visual appeal of a website, its functionality, or both.

You do not need a college degree to work as a developer, but you do need to be familiar with code and web services. By taking free programming classes and creating sample projects where you can experiment with different website designs, you can develop these skills.

IT security specialist

An IT security specialist is a professional responsible for protecting computer networks and systems from unauthorized access, attacks, and other security threats. They develop and implement security protocols and measures, monitor networks for breaches or suspicious activity, and investigate security incidents to determine root cause and prevent future incidents.

IT Security Specialists work to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of digital information and assets. They may also educate employees on security best practices and develop contingency plans. They do not need a degree but they typically have a thorough understanding of cybersecurity principles, network architecture, and industry regulations and standards.

Why so many people are going remote?

People prefer remote employment for a variety of reasons, but the more flexible lifestyle is the most common.

Ana Mendes Godinho, Portugal’s Minister of Labor, has called digital nomads fundamental” and emphasized the crucial role they play in the nation’s development, especially in inland regions and areas such as the Algarve, one of the country’s main destinations for digital nomads.

Godinho, stressed the significance of luring digital nomads to the nation in a recent interview with RTP3, especially to settle in rural areas that, she said, have been “rediscovered by new forms of work”

The minister advocated that the country “needs to invest to attract people to Portugal” and reiterated that Portugal has already positioned itself to have ” the capacity to attract digital nomads.”

Godinho said that there are 650,000 foreigners employed in Portugal, a six-fold increase from 2015. Foreign workers currently account for 10% of the labor force and contribute 1.8 billion euros to social security, according to the minister.

The minister emphasizes the significance of “having open systems for new forms of work” and refers specifically to the regime that allows digital nomads to “actively contribute to Social Security, even if they work for companies in the US or anywhere in the world.”

Portugal has granted “around 550 visas” for digital nomads, the ministry claimed.

Portugal’s Algarve has emerged as one of the top locations for digital nomads, and some of its municipalities have even developed their own communities.

Lagos has also distinguished itself as a place where digital nomads choose to settle, currently holding the top spot in Europe on www.nomadlist.com, a popular website for remote workers.

The Lagos Digital Nomads initiative was founded in 2020 by Joana Glória. She reports that as of mid-September to mid-may, there are 6,500 members in the community, with the majority of them coming from Germany and the Netherlands.

A digital startup in Loulé, further east, developed a new platform to draw digital nomads to the borough’s interior areas.

“Rural Digital Nomads was developed to promote the settlement of remote workers in the mountain parishes of the Loulé municipality”, the promoter said.

“There are many digital nomadic communities on the Portuguese coast, but very few inland. The project comes to fill this gap. That is, we intend to create digital nomadic communities in the interior to solve this gap and attract people inland,” said startup founder Fábio Jesuíno.

Digital nomads from the United Kingdom and other countries are forcing locals out of Barcelona, especially in the hip neighborhood of Poblenou. Along Rambla de Poblenou boulevard, the area, which was once the industrial heartland of Barcelona, has been transformed into tech offices, trendy cafes, and tapas bars as well as design showrooms.

The influx of nomads has raised rental prices along with beer prices, with locals complaining at the high charge of €6 for a beer. British nomads have come in such numbers that in fact English is heard predominately on the streets instead of Spanish or Catalan.

Those from the United Kingdom, northern Europe and even America have been moving to Spain recently due to the Spanish government’s new digital nomads’ visa. The new visa, which was introduced on March 31, gives non-EU nationals the chance to live and work in Spain for up to five years.

This specific visa was approved as parliament has been eager to bolster the country’s tech scene and attract entrepreneurs to the country. Aside from professional requirements, the income threshold is €2,334 per month or €28,000 per year.

Some of the requirements include:

  • Only 20% of their income can be from Spanish firms
  • Applicants cannot have lived in Spain within the five years prior to applying
  • Have had to had their clients on the books for more than three months prior to applying

Change isn’t new to Poblenou, as the neighborhood began its revival back in 2000 when Barcelona city council gave the ok for overhauling old factories. Called @22, the district attracted tech start-ups through financial incentives to move to Spain.

Due to the digital nomad visa, there are other parts of the country that have also been impacted by internationals taking advantage of the visa. Malasaña in Madrid, a once poor inner-city area, has been transformed into a street filled with cool coffee shops and vintage clothing stores.

The study, recently published in World Leisure Journal and conducted by anthropologist Dave Cook, examines what people mean when they talk about digital nomads, how those definitions have changed, and what that means for digital nomads and those who serve them.

Cook finds that there are exactly five different categories of digital nomads:

1. Freelance digital nomads

The pioneers of the digital nomad trend are freelancers who work on the road. According to Cook, “Up until 2020, this group was considered the traditional, stereotypical type of digital nomad and was the subject of the most pre-pandemic research.” These people could work from anywhere and were typically vloggers/bloggers, digital marketers, photographers, designers, writers, virtual assistants, coaches or programmers.

Today, freelancers are still the most common type of digital nomad, but since the pandemic, other types of mobile workers are joining the community with increasing frequency.

2. Digital nomad business owners

“Digital nomad business owners run registered businesses requiring more complexity than the skilled freelancer model. They may have contractors, employees, and product inventory, or require a wider array of business systems and infrastructures to operate,” explains Cook.

Fewer digital nomads are business owners than freelancers, but studies show an increasing number of mobile freelancers are building more complicated brands or businesses, elevating them to “digital nomad business owner” status

3. Salaried digital nomads

Before the pandemic, full-time remote workers who moved between at least three different locations each year were a special group. Currently, they are the fastest-growing group of digital nomads.

According to the study, consulting firm MBO Partners predicts “that digital nomads with traditional full-time jobs doubled in 2020 and increased 42% in 2021.” “MBO estimates that there are 11.1 million salaried digital nomads in the USA alone.”

4. Experimental digital nomads

People who have started working on the road but are not yet earning enough money to support their nomadic lifestyle fall into this category. The report notes that “experimental nomads… are frequently encountered at coworking spaces, conferences, and meetups” and that “backpackers may be combining tourism with the practice of performative work”

According to various previous surveys, the majority of would-be digital nomads abandon their lifestyle after a year.

5. Armchair nomads

Armchair nomads are the antithesis of experimental digital nomads because they make money, have travel dreams, but they have not really left home. “This category hints at how the digital nomad concept continues to seep into mainstream consciousness,” writes Cook. Despite the fact that there are tens of millions of armchair nomads, “little is known about this group and the estimates do not give firm guidance on how aspiration will convert into action.”

Regardless of how many armchair nomads become full-time travelers, the effects of all their fantasies and online research are already being seen in the real world.
