  • Trusted tours in 1000+ cities
  • Payment online
  • Refund options
Get your guide is the perfect way to book half-day tours, full-day tours, 2-day tours, 1-week tours, airport transfers, ferries, cooking courses, tickets for events, food tours etc. It covers most of the countries in the world. They even have a price match guarantee, just tell them you can find the activity or tour cheaper somewhere else and they will cover the difference no questions asked. It’s perfect because you can book everything beforehand and then just enjoy the holiday once you arrive. This way you will know what you will be doing each day and won’t risk being disappointed or changing your plans if an activity or a sight is sold out already. And of course, the best of all is that you avoid scams that can be everpresent in the world of travel where everyone is trying to take advantage of the tourists. It is also the perfect way to research what to do once you arrive in a new place. It really is an amazing service and you should definitely try it out if you haven’t yet!

Skyscanner for flights

  • best flights deals and options
  • useful monthly calendar
  • deals for accommodation with tickets
best travel websites 2020

Let us be honest: amazingly cheap flight tickets are often the first and yet the most important reason we keep on moving our asses from country to country. Even though we promised our inner selves to settle down for a while.

Don’t blame yourself. Put the blame on Skyscanner, their mobile app and their delightfully intruding newsletter.

Withlocals – Enjoy Your Trip with Locals

  • easy booking platform
  • discover cities with locals
  • hikes, food tours, walks, historical tours, etc.

One of the fastest-growing travel projects of last year that connects travelers with a local community. You can book amazing trips with locals and visit the most authentic places and experience local life. Your guide will help you to get out of tourists traps and find the real spirit of the places you want to visit.

They have easy to use APP interface, a great review system, and their trips are way more affordable than traditional agency tours. No brainer!

FACEBOOK TRAVEL GROUPS

Almost everybody is on Facebook and in a few FB groups but yet, they still forget to check them when they are looking for tips or answers.

Here is the list of the most active and helpful travel FB groups:

Check out the best budget USA road trip tips!

Hotel Tonight – LAST MINUTE HOTEL DEALS

USE CODE “VVINCEJ” to get your 25USD discount (minimum spent 150USD)

Hotel tonight has been on the market ever since 2010 and it is pretty awesome. It basically finds you a hotel room immediately (or any time in the next 7 days) by offering you rooms that the hotel couldn’t sell by itself. This is perfect for budget travelers that love to be flexible and not book accommodation beforehand. Traveling without knowing where you will go next gives you the real adventurous thrill that makes traveling really exciting. The only drawback of the app is that you can not choose your room type. The hotel picks your room for you and then you see what you get only when you arrive. A thing that you also need to be careful about is that prices in the app don’t include taxes and fees which can quite add up. Other than that the app is perfect for budget travelers!

REVOLUT – Best Conversion Rates (0% fees)

*TOP* APP for TRAVELERS 2020 & Fastest growing FinTech in Europe

If you are a regular traveler and you haven’t tried REVOLUT yet, then you are missing out a lot. REVOLUT is a fairly new Electronic Money Institution which provides you with some “revolutionary” services.

Having an account with Revolut is for FREE, you just need to pay for the shipping of your debit card. All you need to do is register in the app and order the card. Next step is to link your card with some of your other accounts and TOP up. Topping up is FREE and once your money is on Revolut, then you can take advantages of various features like:

  • FREE atm withdrawals up to 400 euros
  • Real-time spending tracking in the app
  • Best conversion rates / no additional fees / middle conversion rate %

Another great advantage is security because you can top up anytime when you are connected to the internet. That means when you are traveling, you can keep you balance somewhere between 0-100euro and if somebody or some ATM scams you, you won’t lose much. You can also block the card anytime when you are connected to the internet.

AIRWANDER – plan awesome layovers & PAY less & see MORE!

Airwander is a brilliant idea that was definitely missing on the market and have filled the gap! Lots of budget travelers, long term travelers or backpackers are hating their layovers because they just pass by and they don’t have time to discover properly or NO AT ALL (just an airport).

Airwander lets you plan your layovers properly and add extra days to your stay! You can also see plenty of variations between you and your destination which gives you the perfect opportunity to plan your time and get rest in the city where you need to change your flight.

RentalCars.com & Booking.com

RentalCars has been offering best car rental discounts for ages! A few months ago they teamed up with Booking.com and became n.1. rental car search engine. Renting a car can get very expensive addition to your budget while traveling.

Especially when you travel solo or just as a couple. Therefore, RentalCars is your best bet in order to find the best discounts.

Hostelworld

canggu surf hostel - traveling lifestyle

If there is some budget for the accommodation and you wish to enjoy a certain level of being incognito and inner peace, definitely look for the best offers among hostels. Sometimes, they can be pretty expensive, too, but HostelWorld knows what people like us need. Definitely, best website for backpackers!

It can also be a way of securing the first night to skip a lovely sleep on the airport benches. Or, and that is even worse, to spend a night in front of the bus station that usually closes at midnight to 4 am.

In this case, book just the first night and then find some shelter at the locals or meet your potential couchsurfer host on-site.

Homeexchange

home exchange

Swapping houses is a fabulous two-in-one option. You won’t spend a euro on accommodation, and in the meanwhile will get someone to feed your cat and water your roses while you’re off for traveling. Just make sure to get complete references of the swapper and talk together as much as possible in advance.

I confess it might be risky. But on the other hand, the whole active community of HomeExchange is built on trust. See your swappers` former reviews, where and when he or she stayed and what was written about that. Home insurance can also help to enjoy your days off in peace.

If not quite convinced, check the movie The Holiday for a better imagination to see how much fresh air this can bring into your life. Maybe there are huge positive moves ahead!

Agoda for Best Private Home Rental in Asia

Agoda homepage

If you want to browse for housing that is not a hotel, Agoda is a wonderful alternative, as it specializes in offering apartments and private rentals. There are even market managers who specialize in finding apartments, especially in Asia. This way you can find unique accommodations at reasonable prices, and if you change your mind, you can conveniently cancel for free within 24 hours.

Everything is quite easy to use, and if you make multiple bookings, you can save a lot of money. 24-hour multilingual customer service is also available when you book, which is a plus. With millions of reviews, Agoda makes it very easy to choose a hotel or apartment in Asia.

AirBnb – Apartments Rental

GET 20USD discount on your first trip

Haven’t you heard of AirBnb? Then you are missing out my friend. AirBnb is the perfect tool to find cheap accommodation that allows you to live in the place you are visiting like a local.

With AirBnb you can rent a room that is being offered by a local, and that sometimes means having a room in a family house where you interact with them on a daily basis. If that is just not your style then you can rent out a private house, flat or whatever you want. the possibilities are endless.

And if you travel as a couple, renting an Airbnb can be sometimes cheaper than staying in a shared dorm in a hostel. Apartments are becoming a popular alternative to hotels for budget travelers.

WORLD NOMADS – Best / Budget Travel Insurance

Nowadays, there is no need to highlight how important is to have insurance when traveling around the world! Not having one can lead to serious budget issues and you can end up “broke” and finish your trip very fast.

World Nomads has been offering their services for a long time and became N.1. global/international insurance for travelers.

Trusted by big brands like Lonely Planet, Inrepid, International Volunteers HQ etc. You should definitely have a look on their website before you go on your next adventure.

SE7EN – Volunteering

If you are willing to spend a portion of a day by teaching or decorating the walls of an art gallery for accommodation in return, this is something for you. SE7EN offers lists of the volunteer projects and allows you to contact hosts directly.

You will be requested to pay 15-euro membership at the beginning, but if there will be no project chosen from your side, they offer a  money return guarantee.

Couchsurfing

couchsurfing - travel websiteYou might not have known that you can find extremely hospitable hosts all around the world and get a free overnight “couch stay” at their place, whatever it is. Though enjoying this cost-saving option, keep in mind that Couchsurfing is about human connections in the first place.

Be social, spend some time with your host and he will be glad to point out the best places to go in the area. You might experience the best party with his friends diving completely into the local culture.

Feel free to share something with your host. It doesn’t have to be anything valuable. I often show pictures of my current trip or bring something small and typical from my current hometown.

Being a good host is as demanding as to be a good guest. Tolerance is a must on both sides. But above all, it should be fun.

Couchsurfing has turned into the APP as well and you can also find plenty of events/meetups in almost every country. NEW “hang out” option allows you to create an event in your area very fast and catch up with a bunch of travelers for beers/dinner/walk and share some experience from inspiring travels.

Sleeping in Airports

budget travel wwbsite - sleeping at airport

Raise your hand if you have ever slept at the airport. Sometimes it’s about money but sometimes it’s just that your flight departs just so early in the morning that it doesn’t make sense to travel back and forth for more comfortable sleep.

Long sleepovers on the way, objective circumstances you just can’t affect may also leave you stuck at the airport for many hours. This website gathers reviews and experiences of travelers from airports around the world along with useful airport guides to help you survive a sleepover.

Find out where are the electricity plugs, comfortable chairs, quiet areas, free sofas in cafes, wifi passwords, etc.

Handy extra feature we liked is the list of cities where you can enjoy a tour and get to know a city you’re flying through.

Warning: it’s highly possible you will find yourself searching for long stopovers on purpose.

TURO – “Airbnb for Cars” / Car Sharing APP

GET $25 on YOUR FIRST TRIP with THIS LINK

Turo is an amazing car-sharing app that gives you the choice and convenience that traditional car rental companies can’t match.

The process is very simple and it has been called multiple times the Airbnb for cars.

You have different price ranges of cars and different mileage allowances you can choose from. You can even get the car delivered directly to your place!

The insurance is also handled by the app so you don’t need to worry at all. It eliminates all the hassles of renting a car and makes the whole process 100x times more enjoyable than before.

This truly is a revolutionary app that will change the rental car market. What are you waiting for? Book your first rental car through Turo!

Hospitality Club

The Hospitality Club truly provides – as well as couchsurfing.com – a slice of local life. Be sure to stumble on a dedicated community, but forgive their website for being simply ugly.

BeFrugal – Fly or Drive Calculator

travel calculator website

Are you not sure, what will be the cheapest option to reach your final destination, considering all the additional costs like shuttles, taxis and transfers? Be efficient and quick when deciding and above all, save money that you can invest in a better manner later on.

For example, a boat cruise to a small unattended island. The Fly or Drive estimator will make it happen and advice you in a few moments, but sadly, it is available for the US travelers only.

Tripadvisor – Tank of Gas

You have a car, petrol loaded in your tank and a tempting feeling to discover something new in an instant? Check your tank first or make sure how much are you willing to spend on petrol.

In TripAdvisor’s tool type in your hometown and indicate how much gas you want to use – whether full, half, or quarter tank. Tank or Gas app will prepare an elegant list of destinations within reach, topped up by pictures of the suggested attractions.

AutoSlash

Thank Autoslash for saving some money when planning your trip. This easygoing website will lock in the lowest rate on rental cars and will update it and relock whenever the prices decrease.

Book a vehicle from any favorite agency through the site, and Autoslash will instantly begin tracking rate changes for your reservation. If a better offer pops up later, it automatically locks in the lower price on your behalf. Moreover, no fee will be charged. Isn’t it fabulous?

Kayak

Similarly to Skyscanner, Kayak tool searches for the cheapest flying options from your current location. It beats Skyscanner in the field of multi-city trips and includes searches for nearby airports with cheaper fares.

So now do not hesitate a moment. You have all that you need for your budget travel!

Expedia.com

expedia travel website

Expedia is similar to Booking.com, however, it is occasionally less expensive. Expedia Group, Inc. is an American online travel agency for personal and business travel.

Its websites, “which primarily travel fare aggregators and travel metasearch engines, include Expedia.com, Vrbo (formerly HomeAway), Hotels.com, Hotwire.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, trivago, and CarRentals.com.”

When you book through the app, you can save up to 25% on select hotels while earning double points. Their offers will save you even more money on your vacation, which means you can travel more.

The app has a database of over 500,000 hotels around the world.

CheapTickets.com

Cheaptickets.com

CheapTickets is another Expedia acquisition, but it works in a slightly different way. With packages, you can easily book a flight, a hotel and a car, or any combination of the three, with multiple flights being a separate option.

So far it looks like Expedia, but you can also buy event tickets through the site, which is much more beneficial if you want to buy your trip in one place. Other sites offer this as well, but CheapTickets is a bit more eager to draw you into the process.

There is also the Vacation Value Finder on the website, which allows you to indicate how much you are willing to spend and what you expect from a vacation before getting some interesting recommendations.

If you have not decided on a place yet, this is ideal to discover a last minute offer. Students will also appreciate the section dedicated to them, which offers further discounts once you confirm your status as a student. All in all, it’s a fantastically diverse site for a variety of purposes.

Cruise Critic

Cruisecritic

Looking for ideas and recommendations for your next cruise? Check out Cruise Critic, a travel review website. This vacation website contains over 150,000 user reviews and cruise-saving suggestions. Because of its large user base, the ship ratings and other data are excellent. The website also provides special cruise deals.

In addition to the informative forums, Cruise Critic has a search engine option that allows you to book cruises. As a result, it is a well-rounded cruise site where you can select your ideal cruise trip.

Quote by traveltomtom.net. “As I am traveling around the world now for 5 consecutive years I don’t really care to get lost. Travelers that have limited time may see getting lost as a waste of time, but getting lost for me means exploring.

Wherever I go, I try to go off the beaten path and that is how I discovered this side road in Ubud. There was this old man on a small dirt road carrying a bunch of branches. I offered him to jump on the back. I drove him home, somewhere a scooter would normally not get and funny sidenote: in the end we slid off the track into the rice fields. We both laughed out loud and we walked the last bit back to his place. He made me tea to thank me.”

Everyone may probably know that Vatican City is the smallest nation in the world. But what are the smallest nations in the world by population behind Vatican City?

Well, you will find some faraway places with strange-sounding names on this list. There are others that are more recognizable.

Here is the list that we simply call the eight smallest countries in the world by population:

Vatican City (800 residents)

Smallest Contry in The World by Population - Vatican

Vatican City, in Rome, Italy, is the world’s smallest country by population in 2022. Vatican’s population is only about 800 residents. It’s also the smallest country in terms of total square miles. However, it is said that its population may triple or quadruple on any given day because of the inflow of tourists coming to view the city’s renowned paintings and sculptures.

Vatican City is home to perhaps the most recognizable individual in the world: the Pope. The Pope not only reins over the Catholic religion globally, he exercises legislative, executive and judicial power over Vatican City.

Tourists flock to the city to see St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and Vatican Museums. The sale of postage stamps and souvenirs, fees for admission to museums and sales of publications go to support the Vatican City’s economy.

The city is named after Mount Vatican. It was founded on Feb. 11, 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy. It is guarded by the Swiss Guard whose members wear bright colored uniforms.

You are allowed to visit Vatican City without a passport and some places like St. Peter’s Square can be reached easily by just crossing a line that separates it from Rome.

Nauru (10,876 residents)

The Republic of Nauru is an oval-shaped island in the southwestern Pacific Ocean located about 35 miles south of the equator. The latest census statistics show this tiny nation has only 10,876 residents.

Nauru was once known as Pleasant Island. Its central plateau is surrounded by coral reefs. Command Ridge is the highest point of the plateau, 233 feet above sea level. Nauru’s closest neighbor is Banaba Island in Kiribati, 190 miles to the east.

Micronesians and Polynesians were the first people to settle in Nauru. Germany annexed the country in 1888. Nauru’s phosphate deposits, which covered a wide area of the island at the time, began to be mined under a German-British association in 1900.

Nauru’s revenue mostly comes from the export of phosphate. The other major funds are raised through the sale of fishing licenses. Countries such as Australia and Taiwan provide substantial aid to the Nauru economy.

Nauru is plagued with an unemployment rate that currently stands at 90 percent, the highest in the world. More than 95 percent of the people suffer from obesity and some 40 percent are diabetics.

Tuvalu (11,931 residents)

Photo: Guardian

Tuvalu is a country in Polynesia located in the Pacific Ocean. It lies midway between Hawaii and Australia and has a population of 11,931 , according to 2022 census figures. Tuvalu is an island nation that is composed of three reef islands and six true atolls situated west of the International Date Line.

Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu became fully independent as a sovereign state within the British Commonwealth on Oct. 1, 1978. Tuvalu became the 189th member of the United Nations Sept. 5, 2000,.

Tuvalu is a parliamentary democracy. Elizabeth II of England serves as Tuvalu’s queen. Elizabeth II is represented in Tuvalu by a governor-general who is named by the queen upon the advice of the prime minister of Tuvalu.

Tuvaluans are of Polynesian descent and Tuvaluan, their main language, is closely related to Samoan. English is taught in schools and is widely spoken in the country.

If you are looking for a place that has rare sightseeing opportunities Tuvalu is not that place. The island nation is small and critics say it has no architectural heritage, hills, mountains or rivers.

Others believe Tuvalu is still a nice Pacific destination. “Your time can be well spent in the shade of palm trees on one of the nation’s delightful beaches.” one travel writer has said.

Palau (18,169 residents)

Palau, with an estimated 2018 population of 18,169, is a country that is another group of islands located in the Pacific Ocean. It is in the southwest corner of Micronesia and is made up of some 340 coral and volcanic islands perched on the Kyushu-Palau Ridge.

The Philippines are 550 miles to the west. Guam is 830 miles to the northeast and New Guinea is 400 miles to the south. A great barrier reef system surrounds most of the country. Babelthuap, Koror, Malakal, Arakabesan and Peleliu are Palau’s major islands.

If scuba-diving is your sport, Palau is one of the top scuba-diving spots in the world. It’s marine life features a vast array of terrestrial flora. Biologists say Palau has more species of marine life than any other area of similar size in the world.

“Corals, fish, snails, clams, sea cucumbers, starfish, sea urchins, sea anemones, jellyfish, squid, and feather-duster worms exist in profusion and variety,” one marine scientist was quoted as saying.

San Marino (34,017 residents)

The Republic of San Marino is located near Italy in Southern Europe. It has a population of 34,017 and Italian is the dominant language. Its capital is the City of San Marino.

San Marino is on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains and sits on the coast near Rimini, one of Italy’s premier resort areas.

The republic is named for Saint Marinus, a stonemason who is believed to have played a great role in the rebuilding of the city walls of Rimini after the walls were destroyed by pirates from Liburnia. Marinus, legend has it, also was the founder of a monastic community on Monte Titano in AD 301. San Marino believes it is the oldest constitutional republic as well as the oldest sovereign state in existence.

A constitution was written and adopted in the late 16th century still governs San Marino. The constitution dictates San Marino’s political system and other national issues.

Liechtenstein (38,250)

Liechtenstein is an Alpine country located in Western Europe. The German-speaking nation is bordered by Switzerland and Austria and its population is listed as 38,250. The capital of Liechtenstein is Vaduz.

Liechtenstein has been in most Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games since 1936. Athletes from Liechtenstein are skilled in alpine skiing. They have won a total of nine medals in Winter Olympics competition.

The country formed its National Olympic Committee in 1935. Xaver Frick, a founding member of the NOC, is the only Liechtenstein athlete to have been in both the summer and winter Olympic games.

Liechtenstein also has a football team. One of the country’s finest moments came in 2007 when the team defeated Iceland 3-0 in a game played in Vaduz.

Monaco (39,511 residents)

Monaco is a principality in Western Europe. It’s on the French Riviera and is bordered by France and the Mediterranean Sea. Monaco is also about nine miles from Italy. Population figures as of 2022 show Monaco has 39,511 people.

A form of constitutional monarchy governs Monaco and the nation’s prince serves as head of state. The prince uses his position to exert enormous political power over his people.. Except for a few brief intervals, the House of Grimaldi has governed Monaco since 1297.

French is the main language, but Italian and English are widely spoken in Monaco. Monaco’s sovereignty was officially recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. The United Nations welcomed the principality as a voting member in 1993.

The French military forces are responsible for the defense of Monaco even though Monaco has an independent and separate foreign policy. Monaco does have two small military units.

The country is known for its Monte Carlo Casino and its grand prix racing circuit. It also participates in competitive football matches.

Saint Kitts and Nevis (53,544 residents)

Saint Kitts and Nevis is mainly a nation made up of two islands in the Caribbean. It has around 53,544 residents and it’s the smallest country in the Caribbean by population. Its population has remained the same for many years.

Most of the people live on Saint Kitts. The capital city is Basseterre on Saint Kitts. The country is a member of the United Nations, but is also a part of the British Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II is head of state.

Saint Kitts and Nevis draw tourists worldwide. They come to play the greens of Royal Saint Kitts Golf Club and for the Saint Kitts carnival in winter and the music festival every June. Oualie Beach and Frigate Bay are a delight to beach lovers.

If you love history, it’s here. Nevis is the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton and Saint Kitts has its Brimstone Hill Fortress, once known as the “Gibraltar of the West Indies.” Saint Kitts also offers a scenic train tour.

The Marshall Islands (59,610 residents)

The Marshall Island - One of the smallest countries in the world

The Marshall Islands, with an estimated population of 59,610, is a country made up of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It’s in the northern part of Micronesia and has 29 atolls and 1,156 islands or islets.

The Marshallese people are from the Micronesian ethnic group and speak the Marhsallese language, which is closely related to the Micronesian language. English is also an official language and is widely spoken.

This country is also known for its history as a testing ground for nuclear weapons. The most famous site is the Bikini Atoll Site on the Ralik chain of islands. There’s still a United States military base on Kwajalein Atoll.

The country isn’t known for its spectacular natural or man-made sights, but it does have a unique charm. Its greatest attraction for visitors is its many beaches, which offer great options for deep-sea divers, windsurfers and people who enjoy less-crowded sands.

Dominica (72,167 residents)

Dominica - One of the Smallest Countries in the world by Population

Dominica is an island nation in the Lesser Antilles with a population of 72,167. It’s right in the middle of the Antilles chain of islands, and its capital is Roseau.

Most Dominicans are descended from African slaves brought to the island by the French and British between the 1600s-1800s. English is the official language, and many people also speak Dominican Creole French.

This island is the youngest of the Antilles, and it’s also considered one of the most beautiful in the entire Caribbean. Dominica’s a mountainous island with a lot in the field of natural beauty.

Dominica is also a particularly hurricane-prone island. Hurricane Maria devastated the country in 2017, but they’ve been rebuilding nicely.

Most visitors come to “The Nature Island” with natural tourism in mind. Snorkeling, hiking and diving are the most popular activities for tourists. The world’s second-largest hot spring can be found here as well.

Andorra (79,535)

Andorra

Andorra, formally the Principality of Andorra, is a small state with a population of 79,535 in the eastern Pyrenees bordering France and Spain. Catalan is the official language of Andorra.

Andorra is known for its ski resorts and tax haven status, which favors duty-free purchases – though this has changed a bit in recent years.

On Avenida Meritxell in the capital, Andorra la Vella, you’ll find stores and jewelers, as well as several shopping centers. The Romanesque church of Santa Coloma with its round bell tower is located in the medieval town of Barri Antic.

Andorra la Vella is a safe city, although you should definitely take some basic precautions, as it is known that travelers are occasionally targeted by pickpockets, especially near famous tourist attractions.

Seychelles – 93, 920

people waling on the beach in Seychelles

With a population of 93,920, Seychelles is the 12th least populated country in the world. Yet they are the least populated country in Africa. Seychelles has a much smaller population than the second smallest country in Africa.

Seychelles is known for its beautiful and quiet beaches. Although all the beaches in Seychelles are open to the public, they are relatively uncrowded and most of them are easily accessible.

With about half of the land mass designated as national parks and reserves, Seychelles offers an abundance of protected bays and blue waters suitable for private yacht rentals. In addition, the pleasant atmosphere and gentle winds provide an ideal playground for sailing all year round.

Most visits to Seychelles go off without a hitch. However, robberies, burglaries, and casual thefts have occurred against locals, expatriates, and visitors. Although crime is generally not violent, bags have been stolen, cars broken into, and tourists robbed while walking at night, so be careful.

12 Smallest Countries in the World by Area

These small countries are located all around the world — whether you want to soak in the energy of a bustling city or enjoy the peace of a deserted beach, there’s an option that fits the bill.

List of the smallest countries in the world BY AREA

1. Vatican City (0.17 mi²)

Measuring just 0.17 square miles (0.44 km²), Vatican City is the smallest country in the world by area. In fact, it’s so tiny that you might not even notice when you cross its borders. Located in the middle of Rome, Italy’s largest and busiest city, this tiny country blends in with the rest of the metro area.

Although it’s small, Vatican City is home to some of the world’s greatest artistic, historic, and religious treasures. The massive St. Peter’s Basilica dominates the landscape with its soaring dome and enormous plaza. Inside the Vatican Museums, you’ll find the spectacular Sistine Chapel and a host of other world-famous works of art. In fact, these treasures are one of the country’s biggest sources of revenue — it profits from the sale of tickets and souvenirs.

Vatican City is also known for its most famous resident: the Pope. The highest religious figure in the Catholic Church, he resides inside the papal apartments. Nearby, there are acres of pristine gardens and green spaces that surround the governing palace and the various churches and chapels that dot the landscape.

2. Monaco (0.78 mi²)

Monaco comes in at just 0.78 square miles (2.02 km²). There’s a great deal of wealth packed into this tiny piece of land — it’s known for its ultra-luxurious casinos and high-end banking institutions. Thanks to its spectacular location on the French Riviera, this small principality is a popular vacation destination for the rich and famous.

The most recognizable quarter of Monaco is Monte Carlo, which has been memorialized in films for decades. You might recognize the country’s hilly terrain from movies including “To Catch a Thief”, “GoldenEye”, and “Heartbreaker”.

In addition to its famous sparkling seas and megayachts, Monaco is known for its royal family. The American actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III in 1956, bringing worldwide attention to this small country. Since then, the country’s population has exploded; it’s now the most densely populated of the world’s sovereign states.

If you’re making a trip to France or Italy, Monaco makes an easy addition. This small country is connected to Paris and Italy by train, so it’s a popular day trip.

3. Nauru (8.1 mi²)

At 8.1 square miles (20.98 km²), Nauru is considerably larger than the two smallest countries but definitely the smallest Country-Island in the world. It’s also much farther away — this minuscule island is located in the Micronesia region, hidden away in the South Pacific Ocean. Just over 10,000 people live there, ensuring that your visit will be free of crowds.

Nauru was settled by Polynesians and Micronesians thousands of years ago. After being governed by many different nations, it became independent in 1968. Today, the country’s economy is based mostly on the phosphate mining operations that dot its landscape.

Due to its remote location, Nauru is the least-visited country in the world. In fact, fewer than 200 people visit every year. If you make it to the island, you’ll discover beautiful ocean views, modest cultural standards, and less than 20 miles of roads. The entire island is ringed by a coral reef, creating plenty of opportunities for snorkeling and diving.

4. Tuvalu (10 mi²)

Smallest Country in The World by Area

Nestled in the Pacific Ocean between Australia and the United States, Tuvalu is an island nation measuring just 10 square miles (25.9 km²). This area is spread out over three different islands and six atolls. First settled by seafaring Polynesians from Samoa and Tonga in the 14th century, it became a British protectorate in the late 1800s and won its independence in 1976.

Everywhere you look in Tuvalu, sparkling ocean views await. The water is remarkably clear off of the islands, which means that diving and swimming are popular with residents and visitors. You’ll also find kayaking, fishing, and white-sand beaches. Plus, since Tuvalu rarely sees more than 2,000 visitors per year, crowds are virtually nonexistent.

The biggest city in Tuvalu is its capital, Funafuti, which is home to just over 6,000 people. This is where you’ll find the country’s only airport; most other inter-island travel is done by boat. The largest island is Fongafali, where there are four villages with a population of 1,300 or less.

5. San Marino (23.63 mi²)

San Marino is a landlocked country on the northeastern side of Italy. Measuring just 24 square miles (61.2 km²), it’s smaller than many of the nearby Italian cities. This small country isn’t connected to any of Italy’s train lines; instead, most visitors come in by car or bus from Rimini.

San Marino might be small, but it’s quite wealthy — in fact, it has one of the world’s highest GDP levels. Most of the country’s economy centers on finance and tourism. Given its location near the Apennine Mountains, it’s easy to see the appeal. Within the borders, you’ll find rugged peaks and cobblestone streets.

One of the most famous spots in the country is San Marino city, the capital. The entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearby, the famous Guaita fortress overlooks the town from its perch on Mount Titano. With its ancient stone towers, this spot is popular with visitors. San Marino also offers two other fortresses; these fortifications made the country an important player in the conflicts during the Middle Ages.

6. Liechtenstein (61.78 mi²)

With an area of 62 square miles 160 km², Liechtenstein dwarfs many of the smaller countries in the world. Sandwiched between Switzerland in the west and Austria in the east, this narrow nation packs a big geographic punch. In every direction, there are picturesque valleys and towering Alps. You’ll also spot the Rhine River, which runs along the country’s western border.

Liechtenstein is split into 11 different municipalities. The capital is Vaduz — this is where you’ll find the famous Vaduz Castle set atop a hill. This city is also home to the National Art Gallery and the National Museum, two of the country’s top cultural institutions.

Thanks to its alpine location, Liechtenstein offers year-round attractions. In the summer, tourists love to hike along remote mountain trails. When the snow falls, the slopes at Malbun-Steg and Tschagäl buzz with skiers and snowboarders.

Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world; the other is Uzbekistan. This means that not only is the country itself landlocked, it’s also surrounded by other landlocked countries.

7. Marshall Islands (70 mi²)

The Marshall Islands have an area of 70 square miles (181.3 km²) — however, this landmass is spread out over more than 1,150 islands in 29 different coral atolls. Given its unique layout, the Marshall Islands also have the most water-based territory of all of the sovereign states in the world.

The Marshall Islands are spread across the ocean northeast of Papua New Guinea. Just over 59,000 people make their home here, living in small, densely packed villages bordering long stretches of coastline. More than half of the population lives on Majuro. Given the limited landmass, many visitors opt to travel by sailboat. Eneko Island is a popular destination for vacation getaways, and there are plenty of tiny islands that you can visit only by boat.

During the late 1940s and 1950s, the United States military used some of the atolls in the Marshall Islands as a proving ground for nuclear warheads. In fact, the first hydrogen bomb ever created was tested there. Today, the islands’ economy depends heavily on shipping, fishing, and agriculture.

8. Saint Kitts and Nevis (104 mi²)

With 104 square miles (269.4 km²) of land, Saint Kitts and Nevis is the smallest of the sovereign states in the western hemisphere. Although it’s located in the ocean between North America and South America, this country is part of the Commonwealth and recognizes the Queen of England as its monarch.

Made up of two islands — Saint Kitts and Nevis — this small country is a popular tourist destination. With its rugged and rocky peaks and beautiful beaches, it’s not hard to see why. Tourism is the driving force of the islands’ economy, with ever-growing numbers of people flocking in to enjoy swimming, sailing, hiking, and world-class resorts.

Despite its beauty, Saint Kitts and Nevis has a rocky history. English and French colonists started settling there in the early 1600s, leading to war and eventual slavery. The country became fully independent in 1983, with each island retaining its own governing force.

9. Maldives (115 mi²)

If you’ve ever dreamed of a tropical island escape, you’ve probably seen pictures of the Maldives. This island nation, which has just 115 square miles (297.8 km²) of land scattered across 26 atolls in the Arabian Sea, has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Its impossibly perfect turquoise seas, white-sand beaches, and over-water bungalows attract more than one million tourists every year.

Unsurprisingly, tourism is the Maldive’s biggest economic sector. The country has invested heavily in luxury properties that are popular with honeymooners and sun-seekers from around the world. All of this development has happened relatively recently in the years since the 1980s. Some of the islands are dedicated entirely to tourist resorts. This shift caused a huge jump in jobs and income.

In addition to being one of the smallest countries in the world, the Maldives is also the lowest. The average elevation on the islands is less than 5 feet above sea level. If you want to go to the highest point in the country, it’s a short climb — this “peak” stands just 17 feet above the ocean.

10. Malta (122 mi²)

malta - small country

Malta is the 10th smallest country in the world by landmass 120 square miles (316 km²). All of that mass is spread across an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. Don’t let its size fool you — this island country has a relatively large population. In fact, it’s fifth in the world in terms of population density.

Malta, which sits between Europe and northern Africa, is a blend of the region’s cultures. People have been living there since 5900 BC — in that time, residents have seen rulers from the Greeks, Arabs, Romans, British, and more. As a result, it offers an unusual combination of architecture and cultural traditions. You’ll notice it immediately; European-style cathedrals tower over ancient stone buildings that would look right at home in an ancient Arabic souk.

This fascinating history is only one of the attractions in Malta. Tourists flock here for the coastline — brilliant sparkling waters splash against the rocky shores, and the mild climate allows year-round outdoor fun. Summers are particularly beautiful, and crowds of visitors flock to the beautiful Blue Lagoon and St. Peter’s Pool.

Malta is loved by locals, tourists from all over, scuba divers, backpackers and also a favorite destination for digital nomads.

11. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (133 mi²)

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is one of the world’s smallest nations and one of the newest. With a population of only 110,000 inhabitants, the nation plays is not often seen on the world stage. Yet it’s also a lovely place and a much-adored stop for many travelers.

Saint Vincent is the nation’s main island. It’s 345 kilometers or 133 sq at 26 km or 16 mi, it can be seen in a few hours even on foot. In addition to Saint Vincent, the island also occupies two-thirds of the Grenadines chain.

This chain of thirty-two islands lies directly south of the main island. Many islands are easily reached from Saint Vincent. While some of the islands in the chain are inhabited, a great many are not. That makes it easy for people to have a day trip or even spend time there overnight.

12. Grenada (134.6 mi²)

Grenada - One of the Smallest Countries in the World by Area

This tiny independent state lies in the West Indies in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. It sits at the very southern end of the colorful, beautiful Grenadines Island chain.

Grenada is composed of several islands. The largest islands make up the bulk of the nation’s population and landmass. Petite Martinique is composed of a mere 586 acres or 2.37 kilometers. Nine hundred people make their homes here.

Carriacou is another island that is part of Grenada. Home to over eight thousand people, Carriacou is 12 square miles or 31 square kilometers. Known as the island of reefs, it’s highly popular with locals and visitors alike. These islands have a combined area of 348.5 square kilometers or 134.6 sq mi.

With a total population of roughly 112,000, the island nation is easily one of the smallest in the western hemisphere and one of the smallest in the entire world.

One moment you want to strike some epic things off your bucket list and the next moment you’re suddenly in the midst of a corona crisis and can barely leave your house.

Everything passes, and we have to look to the future. What can’t be done today, can be done tomorrow. Those who love the mountains and trekking adventures are probably dreaming about being in nature by now and we know how that feels.

However, let’s not despair. The mountains were there long before you came and they will still be there in the years to come.

In this article, we will introduce you to the best ten trekking tours around the world so you can start planning your next adventure. Get inspired!

Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)

As a child you saw it in the background of the Lion King and ever since you have been wanting to climb it.

The roof of Africa. At the foot you’ll find giraffes, lions and elephants and at the top you’ll find nothing but snow.

Climbing Kilimanjaro, the most famous mountain in the world, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The mystique of the almost 19’500 feet high massif is one in a thousand and is relatively easy to climb for both seasoned mountaineers and amateurs.

Tanzania is also the 5th safest country in Africa and the 5th most visited country in the African continent. Apart from Kilimanjaro, you can visit the beautiful Island of Zanzibar or amazing national wildlife parks.

The Inca Trail (Peru)

It’s only a fraction of the vast network of trails built by the Incas, but it goes directly to Machu Picchu: The Inca Trail.

Get away from modern civilization and hike through the rich history of a mysterious people who were one with nature. The trails were cleared in the mid-20th century and since then millions of hikers, trekkers and daytrippers have found their way to Machu Picchu.

It is no wonder, therefore, that the Peruvian authorities have introduced a limit. Nowadays, a permit must be applied for six months in advance.

Everest Base Camp Trek (Nepal)

A classic. She towers above everything and everyone and is at the top of many wish lists. Mount Everest, the Chomolungma, the Mother Goddess of Earth. For hundreds of years, man has been trying to understand and control the grandeur of Mount Everest.

The top of Mount Everest isn’t for everyone, but there are several ways to get the ultimate Everest experience. The trek to Everest Base Camp, the base camp of Mount Everest is for everyone and offers you the ultimate trekking adventure.

Great Ocean Walk (Australia)

This amazing trail along the Victorian Coast stretches from Apollo Bay to the famous landmark, The Twelve Apostles, and offers its visitors spectacular views over cliffs and golden beaches. Great Ocean Road is a must-visit place when traveling in Australia.

Although the whole trek can be completed in 7 or 8 days, trekkers can also choose a shorter itinerary and get to see the main highlights along the road, like Ryan’s Den, Shelly Beach, or Cape Otway famous Lightstation, Australia’s oldest continuously operating lighthouse.

Mount Toubkal (Morocco)

Mount Toubkal is with 4.167 meters the highest peak in Northern Africa. The High Atlas doesn’t get any higher than Toubkal and the good thing is that the peak of this legendary mountain is accessible by foot.

This makes “Jbel Toubkal” perfect for trekking expeditions. Because the mountain is relatively close to the city of Marrakech, access is easy and trekking tours can be done in a single weekend. Enjoy nature and culture at its best in Morocco!

Salkantay Trek (Peru)

The Salkantay Trek is a Peruvian classic that approaches Machu Picchu via a different trail than the classic Inca Trail. The trek is famous for the Salkantay Pass, which is 4600m high and needs to be crossed.

It is not the only highlight on this trek: Llactapata, Llaqtapata in Quecha, is a complex with Incan Ruins. It is great warming up for reaching the final destination of this trek: Machu Picchu.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek (Nepal)

Another classic of Nepal. The legendary Annapurna Base Camp Trek is also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek.

Go along and trek through the Himalaya to the base camp of Annapurna 1, the legendary Nepalese mountain with a height of 8091m. During the trek you will pass beautiful waterfalls, villages, rice terraces, and breathtaking rhododendron forests.

Climbing Mount Elbrus ( Russia)

Mount Elbrus is a dormant volcano located in southern Russia, in the border with Georgia. Being part of the Caucasus Range, this mountain is the tenth most prominent peak in the world.

This majestic massif hast 2 main peaks, the taller west summit, at 5,642 metres above sea level, and the east summit at 5,621 metres.

There are 2 routes to get to the top and, although they are similar in terms of acclimatization, weather and terrain, there is a significant difference: infrastructure.

Poon Hill Trek (Nepal)

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, also known as the Annapurna Panorama Trek, is the ideal option for the hiker who has too little time for long treks.

The view from Poon Hill during the sunrise is enchanting and is admired by thousands of adventurers year after year. Among them are experienced hikers but also people who get to know the Himalayas for the first time.

The short itineraries and the minimal altitude differences make the risk of altitude sickness enormously small.

Camino de Santiago (Spain)

Become part of a select group of hikers from all over the world and experience one of the oldest pilgrimages in the world: El Camino de Santiago or the St. James path in English.

Dive deep in the Mediterranean culture and walk through the vineyards, dine in little bistros and meet like-minded pilgrims and trekkers on your way. The Camino de Santiago is not a one-way route as there are several options to hike this mythical path to Santiago de Compostela. ¡Vamos!

No matter where you choose to go, the most important thing is to get back on our feet and start moving. We cannot go now, but we can start planning our next adventure. The mountains will be waiting for us once this is over!

When our eyes stumble upon such an unusual concept full of perfection, our brain just bounces back with an “error” and we immediately assume “that’s a photoshop” or unreal!

Well, a quick answer! Yes, it’s very real and you can find it in Michigan, USA.

If you would like to try something fun and relaxing in the spring or summer, give the Labyrinth at Cherry Point Farm & Market a try.

This beautiful labyrinth takes you through twists and turns while you enjoy the enticing scent of lavender. You will look around and discover that the walls are made of a variety of lavender plants that lift your mood and relax your mind, and a stunning herb garden waits for you at the end.

You will be glad you gave this labyrinth a try as soon as you step into its relaxing walls.

Don’t Worry About Getting Lost

Many people avoid labyrinths because they associate them with giant mazes and don’t want to get lost.

Everyone has an easy time getting to the end because the lavender plants have a spiral pattern that guides you in the right direction. If you don’t know what way you should go, follow the pattern to make it to the center.

This labyrinth is around 2 miles long and takes most people an hour to complete. You can go faster or slower depending on your needs and what you want to achieve while you are here.

Relax and Get Away From Daily Stress

One of the best things about the labyrinth is that it almost takes you to another world. While you are inside the lavender walls, you almost forget that you are in Michigan. The blue plants inspire a sense of relaxation that puts your worries to rest.

If you are familiar with aromatherapy, you already know that lavender calms the mind and further creates a sense of relaxation that lets you leave stress behind.

Many people come here to unwind and put their worries behind them for a few short hours, allowing them to leave feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world. You can even turn your journey through the labyrinth into a meditative experience.

Explore the Labyrinth With Friends and Family

Some people come to the labyrinth to get away from everyone and everything for a while, but it’s also a great place to come with friends and family. Children love making their way through the labyrinth and often enjoy the sights, sounds and smells that come with it.

After exploring the labyrinth and herb garden, come to Cherry Point’s market to get your hands on fresh fruits and pastries that make your mouth water. You will find amazing donuts and other treats the entire family is sure to love, and you will know coming here was the right move. Many of the fruits and herbs at Cherry Point Farm & Market are organic and free of harmful chemicals.

Skip the Labyrinth

Some people who visit Cherry Point want to enjoy the herb garden without walking through the labyrinth. If you are in a hurry or just don’t want to explore the labyrinth, you can take a shortcut straight to the center of the herb garden.

You will find tons of herbs and beautiful plants that grab attention and help you relax. Give yourself a break from the rush of your busy life as you look at the many herbs in the garden, and you will be glad you did.

Oceana County, Michigan

Oceana County has a population of around 26,000 residents, and it has cold winters and hot summers. This area has a variety of great attractions nearby that you won’t want to miss, and you will find something that grabs your attention no matter your taste or style. Give the Fox Barn Winery a try, or you could explore the Silver Lake State Park.

If you are bringing children along for the ride, they won’t want to overlook the Lewis Adventure Farm & Zoo. This zoo has plenty of rides and slides to give children a fun time they will remember for years to come. Parents will also enjoy seeing the range of animals and making memories that last a lifetime.

In simple terms, many people overlook Oceana County and dismiss it as just another small county in Michigan. But this county has a lot to offer if you know where to look and what to do. If you get the chance, give yourself an entire day to explore Cherry Point Farm & Market so that you can experience everything it has to offer.

Just when you thought Amazon had run out of things it could sell, the online giant is now offering a build-it-yourself house. According to the seller, you can build this tiny, Scandinavian-style house in just one day. Is this a low-cost solution to your personal housing crisis, or is it just another overpriced shed?

Called the Solvalla, this home building kit from Allwood comes with everything you need to build a small cottage for only $7000. It’s made of solid Nordic wood, comes with all parts and hardware, and requires only minimal tools to build.

Where is the catch? It’s constantly SOLD OUT.

If you’re bored with your other weekend projects, why not try building a house?

Get Instant Guest Space

This sleek number answers the question of where your mother-in-law or other relatives could stay when they visit.

On a more serious note, you could outfit this cottage and turn it into a wonderful guest house. It would be easy enough to add a bathroom with another DIY kit. You could turn it into a home office, a pool house, a workout space or a painting studio. You could even transform it into an AirBnB rental. The possibilities are wide open.

It’s Cute and Compact

Looking at the photos of the finished construction, the house is attractive. It’s a nice-looking alternative to the usual sheds that look like rustic cabins. The interior features tall, clear windows on two sides.

It would be easy to add blinds for privacy. There is a sliding door that opens onto a cute little shaded patio.

Could You Live In It?

garden houses

You probably don’t want to live in the Solvalla for anything longer than a few days. Among other things, it probably doesn’t meet any local codes. You would have to add a lot of features to make it livable.

It probably couldn’t stand up to snowstorms or torrential rains. If you live in a temperate area without weather extremes, this house might find a spot in your backyard.

Before you go rushing off to order it, keep in mind the following:

  • It doesn’t come with electricity or water hookups.
  • You’ll have to add roofing and a foundation. The best foundation for this structure is probably cinder blocks or planks on gravel.
  • You may need a permit to build it.

What’s With All These Fancy Sheds?

The Solvalla isn’t the only house of its kind on Amazon. Allwood also makes the 123-foot Chloe for $6000 and the 113-square foot Escape for $5400. Other builders offer similarly well-appointed and well-built shed kits.

BZBcabins Garden House

The Solvalla seems to be part of a “fancy shed” trend. Even Nationwide Insurance has a commercial that features a woman who has insured her fancy “she shed.”

There’s no denying the popularity of tiny house living, at least on television and in people’s fantasy lives. Sheds are starting to look more like houses, and you can even find instructions on how to turn a storage shed into a tiny house.

Is living in a shed really the new American dream?

Tiny Dreams

Tiny house living sounds dreamy when you see people in their beautifully appointed, perfectly neat sheds.

The reality may be a little rougher. Anything that’s under 500 square feet will be a tight squeeze. It also means tiny appliances, narrow walkways and low ceilings.

An article in Insider magazine showed what those showpiece houses were like when the cameras weren’t around. Residents complained about heat and stuffiness in their loft bedrooms, an inability to keep the houses looking neat, cramped bathrooms and having to crawl into closets and bedrooms.

In 2016, Canadian journalist Erin Anderssen discovered that some of the movement’s biggest proponents were giving up on tiny house living. It’s not something they talk about on the TV shows.

Should You Get a Shed?

All this brings us back to the Solvalla. Is it a cottage or a fancy shed? Does it matter? If you need a nice-looking outdoor space that can double as a guest cottage, the Solvalla might be right for you.

If you have always wanted to move to a beautiful Italian village, you probably think it’s out of your budget. You would be right in most cases, but the town of Cinquefrondi is selling homes for €1.

The town has many abandoned homes and is making an ongoing effort to repopulate, and those willing to relocate to this stunning town can do so for less than a cup of premium coffee.

The town is in a great location and offers stunning views to which you would otherwise not have access.

SO WHERE IS THE CATCH?

You will have to renovate the home you buy and restore it to the condition it was in when it was still new.

About Cinquefrondi

Before you pack your bags and move to a new country, you probably want to know a little about the town to which you are traveling. Cinquefrondi is in the middle of the Aspromonte National Park and has two seas nearby.

This location is a midsized town and has a population of around 89,000 residents who are pleased to call it their home. If you enjoy moderate climates that never get too hot or too cold, this town could be the perfect place for you.

The average low temperature is around 50 degrees in January, and the average high in August is 75 degrees. The area gets the most rainfall in the winter months. When people don’t want to experience cold weather or rain, they often buy vacation homes in Cinquefrondi and visit in the summer. You can buy a home here whether or not you are an Italian citizen.

Renovation Tasks

It’s important to know what renovation tasks you might have to complete when you buy a home in this Italian paradise. If you have never done home renovations before, you can learn or hire a company to do them for you.

In the long run, you still get an Italian home for much cheaper than you would otherwise. Many renovation projects include remodeling the bathroom and kitchen.

This can include replacing the floors, sinks and cabinets in addition to working on a variety of other tasks. You might need to replace the stove and other kitchen appliances before moving forward.

Depending on the house you buy, it could require new windows and doors to make it livable.

Be prepared to inspect the plumbing and wiring to ensure your new home is a safe place to live, and you will be off to a great start.

Requirements

Pay attention to the requirements if you don’t want to face unwanted surprises with your new home. Speak with city officials if you are interested in buying a home so that you will know the exact terms to which you are agreeing.

For most homes, you must begin the home renovation project within three months of your purchase. You can begin with any renovation you have in mind or that fits into your budget, and you can work at your own pace.

Even though you can work at your own pace in the beginning, you are still on a time limit. You have three months from your purchase date to complete all required renovations.

You can move into your new home as soon as it’s safe for you to do so, and your dream of having a stunning Italian home is easier to reach than you once thought.

Application Process

When you are ready to begin, you visit the city’s website and download an application for the home you would like to buy. You will find information and pictures related to the property in which you are interested, and you can review all the terms before agreeing to anything.

Keep your goals and needs in mind while you review the terms if you don’t want to get stuck with a bad deal that does not make sense for you over the long term. If you find a home that grabs your attention, find out what renovations you have to complete in the next three years and how much they will cost.

Final Thoughts

Most people think having a home in an Italian paradise is only for the rich and famous, but anyone can make this dream a reality if they know where to look.

You need to translate the website unless you speak Italian, and the document you download is also in the native language. You can see pictures of the homes to get an idea of what shape they are in before you decide. While most of these homes require an investment of time and money, it’s a rewarding project if you can make it work for you.
